Principal Game Designer
Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced Senior or Principal Game Designer to own and elevate the 3C (Camera, Character, Controls) and core player experience for our upcoming project.
In this role, you will be the driving force behind how the main character moves, feels, behaves, and interacts with the world and combat systems. You will combine high-level design vision with hands-on UE5 Blueprint prototyping to turn "good" character responsiveness into an unforgettable "great" player feel.
As a Senior/Principal team member, you will also help set high-quality bars, solve complex gameplay and technical challenges, and mentor other designers across the team - all without the burden of formal people management.
YOUR DAILY TASKS
3C & Player Feel: Drive the design and polish of Camera, Character, and Controls (3C) to guarantee seamless and highly responsive TPP gameplay.
UE5 Prototyping: Build, test, and iterate on character movement, core controls, and combat interactions directly within Unreal Engine 5 via Blueprints.
End-to-End Feature Execution: Take gameplay mechanics from paper concepts and rough greyboxes all the way through technical execution, balancing, and final polish.
Cross-Discipline Alignment: Work hand-in-hand with Animation, Code and Level Design to build reactive character behaviors and clean gameplay loops.
System Balancing & Feel Tuning: Dial in exact values for animation windows, camera behavior, and input responsiveness to ensure total mechanical clarity.
Technical Guidance: Mentor other designers on the team, sharing your game feel expertise and elevating the overall design craft.
Pipeline Improvement: Partner alongside Engine and Tech teams to streamline our iteration tools and workflow for 3C development.
REQUIREMENTS
7+ years of professional game design experience, with a heavy focus on 3C, action mechanics, or combat design.
At least 1 shipped AA or AAA action title in a Senior or Principal capacity.
Strong expertise in Third-Person Perspective (TPP) mechanics, camera systems, character feel, and player responsiveness.
High technical proficiency in Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) and Blueprints - rapid interactive prototyping is second nature to you.
Deep understanding of game feel fundamentals: timing, feedback loops, animation state machines, input buffering, and camera behaviour.
Proactive & Independent Mindset: Ability to take full ownership of complex features, identify technical roadblocks, and resolve them without needing top-down direction.
Strong Communication & Collaboration: Ability to articulate design decisions clearly to animation, tech, and art disciplines.
Mentorship Skills: Passion for elevating the team's craft and helping junior/mid designers grow.
Fluency in English (written and spoken).
NICE TO HAVE
Experience designing action combat systems (melee, ranged, enemy behaviours, or boss encounters).
Solid understanding of technical constraint management and optimisation in UE5.
